We practice Science.
At Via Christi Cottageschool, we supplement your homeschool with a weekly experiment or activity focused on the study of the natural world.
We believe that in continually familiarizing students with the practices of observation, inquiry, and hands-on discovery. We achieve this with hands-on, group experiments at during every Community Day. This allows students to see principles at work in real time and develop habits of careful observation.
Experiments are designed to be age-appropriate while remaining unified under the same weekly or monthly topic, allowing students of different ages to engage with the material at their own level while still sharing a common focus. After each experiment, students gather to observe results, ask questions, and discuss what they have seen.
For the science-hesitant student, this is a great way to become comfortable around the tools and materials used in the study of our natural world and to ignite the curiosity required to pursue scientific study independently.
For the science-enthusiastic student, optional enrichment materials are provided to each family. These materials offer additional experiments, questions, and activities that can be used throughout the week to deepen understanding and further explore the topic. Participation in these extensions is entirely optional and meant to serve families and students who desire more depth or continued exploration at home.
Our approach to science cultivates curiosity, attentiveness, and a willingness to engage with the natural world.
Students learn to observe carefully, describe what they see, and begin to think about cause and effect. Over time, they develop not only familiarity with scientific ideas, but also the habits of mind that support scientific thinking—patience, precision, and thoughtful inquiry.
In this way, science becomes a space of discovery: a weekly practice of noticing, wondering, and learning to see the order and wonder within the world God has made.
